Sermon Notes

Sermon Title: When We Forget Who GOD Is

Text: 1 Chronicles 16:11-12 | Supporting: Psalm 78:4,7

What does it mean to forget who God is?

We forget who God is — that he sees all, knows all, has control over all.

We forget what he is like — that he is close, quick to forgive, steadfast, for us and with us.

We forget what he has done — key line: “We have the memories of goldfish.”

We forget who we are to him — that he sees us as his son or daughter, knows us for who we were made to be, not what we just did.

Three key ways God invites his people to remember.

God gives his people Stories.

“In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ tell them…” Joshua 4:6-7

God is here in our lives today. God came through for us. This is who we are. Don’t forget.”

Jesus gives us a Practice.

At the Last Supper, he passes around bread and a cup and says: “Do this in remembrance of me.” Luke 22:19

If we regularly remember who he was, how he lived, and how he loved, we remember that we’re called to be the same.

The Spirit helps us Remember

26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. John 14:27-28

Takeaways for Us?

Find a way to reflect on and remember your story.

Consider journaling or invite a friend for coffee or a meal and talk about the things that really matter—not just surface-level pleasantries.

 Build intentional reminders

A family tradition, a physical object, an annual rhythm. Be specific. The more concrete, the more it will inspire the next generation.

Listen to his voice

To hear what the Spirit is saying, we have to create space.

It’s pretty rare that we accidentally remember God. More often, we have to choose it.”

In Closing

God is not far from you. He is not keeping his distance until you finally get it together. He’s not waiting for the best version of you.

He’s waiting for you to remember. To remember who he is. To remember to call on his name. To reach for his hand.
